Can we talk Maxi-dresses, friends?
Earlier this month, I came across a satirical post on Jezebel entitled “Death to the Maxi Dress”.
{GASP!} What??
The post was tongue in cheek, sure….but…
To this die-hard, Maxi-dress obsessor, just reading the words felt blasphamous.
Every spring/summer I rekindle my love affair with the maxi-dress and string this fling as long as I possibly can.
What’s that? Fall chill creeping in, you say? No problem that a denim jacket can’t fix.
You guys, half the year my closet is FILLED with a variety of these comfortable and effortless dresses.
And I am not ashamed to admit it.
Need to go from day to night? Easy peasy– just switch out accessories and footwear– BAM!
I know there are some people who feel like they cannot pull this style off, but I am here to tell you that is just plain old baloney!
With the wide variety of cuts, prints and materials, I pinky-promise there is a maxi-dress out there to flatter every body type.
And because I so whole-heartedly believe every woman needs one (or 20) in their closet this summer, I put together a quick guide to help you find (and rock) the perfect maxi-dress for your body type.
I am not a fan of hard and fast rules –well except socks and sandals– which is always a NO. I struggle daily to instill this in my 10 year old son (sigh)… but I digress.
As you read the descriptions, you will see some of these dresses would into fit several frame categories or you may find that your body type fits into more than one category.
My point: all curves are not created equal.
Everyone’s body is uniquely, and beautifully different.
My advice as always, take note to these tips and try any that you truly love.
What you try on may surprise you!
If you feel confident and gorgeous–throw the rules out the window and ROCK IT.
(unless again, we are talking about socks and sandals… or stockings and sandals…. I have a thing with footwear)
Oh hey! .. and I apologize in advance for the abundance of tie-dye love. I can’t help myself.

Seek empire waists that will draw attention upward, so go ahead and show off those shoulders and collarbone with a v-neck and thin spaghetti straps. Cinched waists will give you a more defined waistline and strategically placed prints can work magic.
Avoid dresses with bottom half only prints.
