#SuccesIsCalling: 5 Things You Need To Do To Prepare For Your Next Phone Interview

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by TracFone; opinions are 100% my own.

Getting a phone interview can be a mix bag of excitement and nerves.

I know this all too well because as a freelancer and blogger, 90% of my client interaction is often virtual. Hopping on conference calls to discuss potential partnerships is a part of my job that I do weekly!

Even doing these interviews on a weekly basis, nerves can still creep up but I’ve learned that with a little preparation it is possible to embrace the excitement and avoid breaking out in full-on flop sweat.

Earlier this month, I shared a little about TracFone and Dress for Success’ Success is Calling program, which prepares and empowers women for that first step in the interview process– the phone interview.

It is an incredible program that changes women’s lives. The women who have graduated the program are a testament to how the proper preparation for a  phone interview can set you on successful career path.

When your resume has made its way to the top of the pile and you’re scheduled to be in the hot seat with your potential new employer (or client) it is your one chance to make that lasting first impression.

Below are some of my quick and easy tips to help you ace your next phone interview.

Get head-to-toe dressed

Sure it is easy to take a phone interview in your PJ’s. The interviewer won’t know, but I can guarantee you will interview differently in PJs. When you are fully dress with your hair and makeup done, you will automatically feel ready because when you look ready and confident, you feel ready and confident.

Print out a copy of your resume + make crib notes

You should always be familiar with your resume (you would be surprised how many people forget what is on theirs!). For your phone interview, print a copy out and highlight some of the key points you want to touch on.

* Bonus tip: Research the company and jot down some important things about them, like new marketing initiatives, products and the company mission or motto.

Take the call at home

As tempting as it may be to take your phone interview in your car or at a friend’s house in the middle of the day, it really is important to be home, in a quiet,  distraction free spot. You will be able to focus better and present yourself in a more professional manner.

Plan and practice your greeting

To avoid any awkwardness, confidently answer your call “Hello, this ___”. The interviewer will then identify themselves (jot down their name and use it throughout your interview) and then you let them know you’ve been looking forward to their call. Phone interviews often begin with a “Tell me a little about yourself”, so after your greeting be prepared with a quick intro highlighting some of your background.

Be ready 5 minutes early

Interviewers will sometimes call a little early and you don’t want that to throw you off. So it’s best to be prepared a few minutes early just in case.
