You know that blonde that goes around singing from the mountain tops about the cold not bothering her? Well that blonde– is nothing like *this* blonde.
Despite being a born and raised New Yorker, who thus far has chosen to settle down and raise her family in New Jersey, I am a total baby about these cold winter months.
The sun doesn’t shine as long or as bright. The grass is dead, the trees are bare. De-icing your car every morning is once again… a “thing”... and perhaps worst of all, the dry winter air and billowy winds can leave our skin feeling like it just had a major makeout sesh with sandpaper– BLECH!
If given the option, I would go into total hibernation like a bear– but let’s be honest– that’s never really an option, so having a survival plan in place is very necessary.
Below are a few simple tips that I’ve found make those bitter cold winter months a little more bearable.
Turn To The Light
Over the years, I’ve found the lack of sunlight was really affecting my mood and productivity, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I turned my desk towards the window in my office. I also removed all screens from the windows in our home so that I could fully soak in as much vitamin D as possible. These changes were super simple and highly effective!
Exfoliate Your Lips With A Toothbrush
Chapped lips are a real problem in the winter. Keep those lips kissable by using a toothbrush and a mixture of coconut oil and sugar to exfoliate your lips at least once a week. Always follow up with your favorite lip balm.
Up Your Skincare Game
There is nothing worse than dealing with dry, cracked skin– but the good news is that with the right skincare products all of that is totally preventable.
When we are living in an area with seasons (like me here in the Garden State of NJ), keeping the same skincare regimen year round is simply not an option. In the winter we need to kick it up a notch and keeping your skin moisturized is always key.
Recently I started using Olay Moisture Ribbons Plus body wash– and you know how much I love my double duty beauty products (because– time!)? Well, this body wash is a creamy cleanser and moisturizer in one. Its deep conditioning formula includes Olay’s signature moisturizing ingredient, Shea butter, and I’m telling you– your skin will feel soft and smooth as soon as you leave the shower. I highly recommend adding this body wash to your winter shower routine!
After your shower, its time for your daily moisturizer. In the winter, I always switch my lightweight moisturizer to body balm, which is a little thicker in texture and protects your skin a lot better against the dry cold air.
Focus On the Positive
Like so many things in life, mindset is everything. It’s easy to get caught up in complaining about the cold– when you are less than enthused about the winter but there is no denying that there *are* some things that are notably more enjoyable in the cold, such as; blanket scarves, fuzzy socks, snuggling up by the fire, comfort foods (my personal faves are bowls of chilli or loaded potato soup), (spiked) hot beverages, even coffee feels a little cozier on a cold morning. Think and enjoy those things as much as you can… and remember every day is one day closer to spring!
