When I was pregnant with Avery, I will never forget waking up with a pimple the size of Mount Fuji on my chin.
It popped up seemingly out of no where in all of it’s bright red glory and was just the beginning of my mini-acne breakout sesh during my pregnancy.
Because hormones are mean.
Trust that this picture does it no justice… and it grew and multiplied, my friends.
My then four-year-old daughter looked at me with an expression of both disgust and terror– that can only be compared to that scene in Mean Girls when Regina George shows up in sweats on a Monday after her all-carb diet fail…
“Um. Mommm. WHAT is on your face?”
You have to love kids and their unfiltered honesty, right?
She then proceeded to DRILL me on pimples and acne the rest of the week (you know, just to let me know it was indeed still there and getting worse by the minute).
Delaina: Mommy, why do people get pimples?
Me: It just happens sometimes. It goes away.
D: Do kids get pimples?
M: Not usually, but teenagers sometimes do when their skin changes.
D: Do kindergarten kids get pimples?
M: No… But Laina it can go away. No big deal. Seriously. Don’t worry.
D: I don’t want to get big.
And just like that! My was four-year-old was totally freaked out by acne.
I, of course tried to downplay it, but who can blame her?
Breakouts aren’t pretty and they always seem to “pop up” at the worst possible times (not that there’s ever a time that feels like a “good time for a breakout”) . I had a wedding the weekend Mount Fuji arrived– awesome!
And while teenagers going through hormonal changes are often most commonly thought of when it comes to acne, the truth is that many of us continue to struggle with this throughout our lives– some on going, and some– like me periodically– during a pregnancy, or that time of the month.
We will (and have) tried everything to rid ourselves of these breakouts, but it can take weeks to see results, and after all that face washing (and cover up) we are often left with dried out skin.
