Amazing Hair Is a Confidence Boost
Is there anything more confidence boosting than a banner hair day??
For some this looks like frizz-free, straightened locks, but my version of a banner hair day looks a lot more like loose, bouncy curls with lots (ok, even a little) volume … that lasts more than 2 hours!
You see, though I was born with a head full of hair that is still talked about amongst my family today, those many, many strands of hair were and still are super fine and pin straight.
{ Everybody say awwwww 😉 }
That being said, I have to admit that over the years I’ve learned fine hair can be both a blessing and a curse. The upside being, blow drying fine hair takes significantly less time than it does for our friends with the thick, voluminous tresses we admire every day of our lives. The downside? Our hair doesn’t always play by the same rules & finding the right products and can be tricky to say the least.
So for my fellow fine haired friends, today I’m sharing 5 of my best fine, thin hair hacks and secrets. I can’t promise they will make your hair instantly as voluminous and sexy as a Victoria Secret Angel, but I can promise your hair will look and feel pretty darn fab!
How To Care For And Style Thin, Fine Hair
- Keep it oil free
… even if that means shampooing it every day. I figured I’d get the most controversial truth I know out of the way.
I know.
My hairstylist friends hate me for saying this (sorry!). We all know that in general, hair is healthier when we wash it less– but if you’re like me and your fine hair get super oily after 24 hours and you’re looking to wear your hair down? It’s kind of a must.
Now, every rule has exceptions and my exception for this one is that if you can wear your hair up on day 2? Dowse your oily mane with some dry shampoo, throw it up in a pony or messy bun and call it a day. I try to do this at least once a week. - Alternate Your Shampoos
Now, why do I alternate you ask?
Great question. I alternate because as must as I love Biolage’s Scalp Sync, it is a bit like a clarifying shampoo and while that is great for oily scalps, overdoing it can leave your hair dry and brittle. I find that alternating creates the perfect balance.
So what are the best shampoos for thin/fine hair?
First. Run –don’t walk– away from products with the words “hydrating” or “smoothing”– those are fine hair code words WEIGH YOUR HAIR DOWN. Below are my current faves:
– Biolage ScalpSync Shampoo + Conditioner
– Garnier Whole Blends Oat Delicacy
Biology Scalp Sync helps normalize oily hair. It’s also great for soothing scalp irritation and pesky dandruff. Its blend of minty leaves and anti-bacterial ingredients leaves your hair feeling soothed, clean and super fresh. It is a little pricier than your drugstore shampoos but a little goes a long way (especially when alternating) and it has truly been a game changer for me.
Garnier’s Whole Blends Oat Delicacy line is formulated especially for fine hair. I love it because it leaves my hair feeling smooth and well conditioned, but never weighed down. Also? The oat milk and rice scent is such a comforting, soothing scent! - Blow-dry your hair upside down
After applying a lightweight heat protecting product to the ends of your hair, flip your hair over and blow-dry with a round thermal brush upside down.
- Use a volumizer & reverse the roll
When your hair is nearly completely dry, add a little volumizing mousse. My personal favorite at the moment is John Freida Luxurious Volume. The difference it makes when I style my hair with this product is incredible– and it lasts all day!
Once you’ve applied the mousse to your roots, continue to blow dry upright with your round thermal round brush (and this is the most important detail…) in the opposite direction of how you want to wear your hair!
This styling technique will blow you away– try it! - Don’t go crazy with product
It is incredibly easy to weigh down fine hair, but it is sometimes equally as easy for us fine haired ladies to want to use all the products to help us hold our style together. In addition to a lightweight heat protector (on your ends only) and a volumizing mousse at the root, the only other product I recommend using when trying to hold a curl is a light, texturizing hair spray such as Bumble and Bumble’s Dryspun finish.
- Get Layers
It’s a well-known fact that adding some layers will add dimension to your locks. Then, when put in some beachy waves, your hair looks thicker and fuller.
So go ask your hair dresser for some volumizing layers – you will love it!
Braids are also one of my go-to’s for “faking thick hair”.
